May 21, 2020:

We are revising our truck schedule and getting other measures in place regarding our operations for summer 2020.  All existing truck reservations have been cancelled, but we will send an email with more details and information in the next few days about what services we plan to offer for the remainder of the summer and how to make (or re-make) reservations. Thanks for your patience!

Toolik Field Station Closure - 3/21/2020

Effective immediately: It is with sad hearts that we must announce that, due to the developing COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to host research or support personnel at the Toolik Field Station at least through the end of June 2020. After consultation with University of Alaska Fairbanks administrators, our physician sponsor, and NSF, we are taking this unprecedented step to prevent both researchers and staff members at the Toolik Field Station from being infected with the novel coronavirus in our remote setting, which is far from medical assistance. Now that there are confirmed COVID-19 cases in Fairbanks, there is no longer a reasonable way to assure that travelers to the Toolik Field Station are free of the virus.

As a result, Toolik Field Station will not accept housing reservations for dates before July 1, 2020, and we cannot provide any on-site services, including berthing, fuel, food, or access to any facilities. All existing reservations through June will be canceled. The station will be minimally staffed to ensure that the facilities are maintained, and to provide limited Remote Access to research projects.

We recognize that this closure will severely impact many scientific projects. To assist continuing research projects, we will offer limited Remote Access to minimize data loss as much as possible. Remote Access means that the few Toolik staff members who will be remaining on-site until July 1 could collect and ship samples, maintain dataloggers, swap or install sensors, or take field measurements according to your research plan. We cannot do all the work that you would have done, but hopefully we can help you from having the season be a total loss. A survey on your needs for remote access will be distributed very soon, and we will also conduct a virtual town hall to discuss how remote access will work, and how requests will be prioritized. We sincerely hope that by July of 2020 we will be able to return to more normal operations, and that the situation with the pandemic will have improved. However, we will have to re-evaluate the situation as time goes on. We will keep you informed. Please feel free to contact us with your questions and concerns. We also strongly advise that, if you make reservations for July 2020, you should purchase refundable airline tickets.

Sincerely, Donie Bret-Harte, Brian Barnes, Mike Abels, and Brett Biebuyck
